Workplace pension auto-enrolment explained

SYMUpdated Retirement

Since 2012, UK employers must automatically enrol eligible workers into workplace pensions. Understanding this system helps you make the most of free pension contributions.

How Auto-Enrolment Works

If you earn over £10,000 annually and are aged 22 to State Pension age, your employer must automatically enrol you. You contribute 5% of qualifying earnings (including tax relief) and your employer adds 3%, making 8% in total. Qualifying earnings are the part of your pay between £6,240 and £50,270 a year.
  • Your contribution: 4%+1% tax relief = 5% minimum
  • Employer contribution: 3% minimum
  • Total minimum: 8% of qualifying earnings

Can You Opt Out?

Legally you can opt out, but you shouldn't. You'd lose free employer contributions and tax relief. Unless you're in severe financial hardship, staying in is always worthwhile.
What if I'm not automatically enrolled?

You can still join a workplace pension voluntarily. Ask your employer. Even partial contributions are valuable with employer match.
