Employment and Support Allowance (ESA): a UK guide

SYMUpdated Benefits

Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) provides financial support if you're unable to work due to illness or disability. It also includes support to help you return to work when you're able.

ESA Rates

New-style ESA (contribution-based) is for those who have paid enough National Insurance. In 2026/27 it pays up to £95.55 per week (£75.65 if you are under 25) during the 13-week assessment phase. In the work-related activity group it is usually limited to 12 months; in the support group you get an extra £50.35 a week with no time limit. Income-related ESA is means-tested and is being replaced by Universal Credit.
  • New-style ESA (25 or over): £95.55/week
  • Under 25 in the assessment phase: £75.65/week
  • Support group: additional £50.35/week
  • Income-related ESA tops up to standard rate

Work Capability Assessment

You'll be assessed to determine which group you fit into: the Work-Related Activity Group (with additional support and requirements) or the Support Group (no work requirements). The assessment considers your capability to do work-related activities.

How to Claim

Claim online via Gov.uk or call the Jobcentre Plus claim line. You'll need a fit note from your GP. Complete a capability for work questionnaire (ESA50) and may attend an assessment. The process typically takes several weeks.
