Council tax is one of the UK's most hated bills — but it's also one where many people are massively overpaying. Between discounts, exemptions, reductions, and benefit schemes, there are multiple ways to reduce or even eliminate your council tax. Here's everything you need to know.
Single Person Discount
If you're the only adult living in your property, you're entitled to a 25% discount on your council tax bill. This applies even if children live with you. Many people don't realise they qualify or forget to apply when a partner moves out. Contact your local council to apply — it takes about 10 minutes and saves the average UK household £500–£700/year.
Council Tax Reduction (CTR) Scheme
Council Tax Reduction (previously called Council Tax Benefit) is a means-tested scheme that reduces bills for people on low incomes. Unlike most benefits, CTR is administered by individual councils, so the rules and generosity vary by area. Some councils reduce bills by 100% for the lowest-income households. Apply through your local council's website — it's separate from Universal Credit.
- •Available to working-age and pension-age residents
- •Amount depends on income, savings, and household composition
- •Apply to your local council — not DWP
- •Backdating claims is sometimes possible
Exemptions and Disregards
Some people are completely ignored (disregarded) when calculating council tax, including full-time students, apprentices, those with severe mental impairment, and under-18s. If all residents in a property are disregarded, you may pay nothing. Full exemptions apply to properties that are unoccupied due to the resident's death or hospital stay, among others.
Disability Reduction Scheme
If someone in your home has a disability and the property has been adapted for their needs (a room used mainly by the disabled person, or extra space for a wheelchair), you may be entitled to the Disabled Band Reduction Scheme — which reduces your bill to the rate of the band below yours.
Check Your Band Is Correct
Council tax bands were set in 1991 based on property values at the time — and many are wrong. Around 400,000 properties in England are estimated to be in the wrong band. You can challenge your band through the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). If your neighbours' similar properties are in a lower band, you have good grounds for a challenge.
How do I apply for council tax reduction?+
Apply directly to your local council, either online via their website or by calling the council tax department. You'll need income, savings, and household details.
Can I get council tax reduction if I'm working?+
Yes — CTR is based on income, not employment status. Many working households on modest incomes qualify for partial reductions.
