How to Reduce Your Council Tax: UK Discounts and Exemptions

If you're the only adult in your property, you're entitled to a 25% discount. This is the most common reduction and saves hundreds per year. Students, people with severe mental impairments, and live-in carers don't count as adults for this purpose. Apply through your local council — it's usually a simple online form.

Your council tax band is based on what your property was worth in April 1991 (England and Scotland) or April 2003 (Wales). If you think your home is in the wrong band — perhaps because similar properties nearby are banded lower — you can challenge it through the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). Check the VOA website to compare your band with neighbours. If successful, the rebanding applies retrospectively and you'll get a refund.

Full exemptions apply to: properties occupied entirely by full-time students, empty properties undergoing major repairs (up to 12 months), properties left empty by someone who's moved to a care home, and properties occupied only by under-18s. Disabled reduction applies if you need an extra room for wheelchair use or medical equipment — this drops your band by one level.
