Should You Get a Water Meter? UK Guide to Saving on Water Bills

SYM

If you're on a rateable value water bill, you're paying a fixed amount regardless of how much water you use. Switching to a water meter means you pay for what you use — which could save a lot if you're in a small household, or cost more if you have a big family. Here's how to work it out.

Who Saves with a Water Meter?

Generally, you'll save if: your home has more bedrooms than people (e.g., a couple in a 3-bed house), you're careful with water usage, or you live alone. The rule of thumb is: if there are fewer people than bedrooms, a meter usually saves money. Water companies are required to fit a meter for free if you request one, and most offer a 12-month trial where you can switch back if it costs more.

Who Might Pay More?

Larger families, keen gardeners, people who take long showers, and those with water-hungry appliances might pay more on a meter. If you have 4+ people in a 3-bed house, the unmetered rate might be cheaper. However, it's worth checking with your water company's online calculator — every area has different rates.

How to Switch

Contact your water company and request a meter installation. It's free and usually takes 2-4 weeks. In England and Wales, you have the right to request a meter. In Scotland, the process is different as water is included in council tax. After installation, monitor your bills for the first quarter. Most companies let you revert within 12 months if you're not saving.

Tips to Reduce Water Usage

Once on a meter, every drop counts: fix dripping taps (a dripping tap wastes over 5,000 litres a year), take shorter showers (4 minutes saves water vs a bath), only run the dishwasher and washing machine with full loads, use a water butt for garden watering, and install a cistern displacement device in older toilets (free from most water companies).
