Couple finances: merge or keep separate?

SYMPlanning

There's no right answer for how couples should manage money. The best approach depends on your situation and preferences.

Fully Merged

One joint account for all income and expenses. Both have equal access. Works well for couples with similar spending habits and high trust.
  • One account for everything
  • Equal access for both
  • Requires high trust

Partially Merged

Joint account for bills and shared expenses, separate accounts for personal spending. Each person contributes their share to the joint account.
What about personal spending money?

Each person gets an equal 'personal allowance' to spend however they like, no questions asked. This preserves independence.

Fully Separate

Keep all finances separate, split bills proportionally or by income. Works for couples who value independence or have very different income levels.
