Statutory Sick Pay 2026/27: UK employee guide

SYMUpdated Income

When you're too ill to work, Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) provides a safety net. Understanding your rights ensures you get what you're entitled to.

Current SSP Rates (2026)

SSP is £123.25 per week in 2026/27, or 80% of your average weekly earnings if that is lower, for up to 28 weeks. Since 6 April 2026 there is no minimum earnings level to qualify, and your employer pays SSP from your first day of sickness.
  • £123.25 per week or 80% of earnings, whichever is lower (2026/27)
  • Maximum 28 weeks
  • No minimum earnings threshold from April 2026
  • Paid by employer from day one

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify, you must be an employee (not self-employed), have done some work for your employer, and be too ill to work for at least one full working day. You need to notify your employer within their specified time limit.

Getting Medical Evidence

For periods up to 7 days, you can self-certify using form SC2. For longer periods, you'll need a fit note from your GP or hospital doctor. Your employer may have their own notification requirements — check your contract.
