Save money on London transport: Tube, bus and rail tips

SYMTransport

London's transport network is world-class but pricey. With some knowledge, you can significantly reduce your travel costs.

Always Use Contactless or Oyster

Never buy single paper tickets — they're much more expensive. Use contactless bank card or Oyster card. Both cap daily and weekly costs automatically.

Railcard Discounts

If you travel by train regularly, a railcard saves 1/3 on most tickets. The 16-25, Senior, and Disabled railcards also give 1/3 off Tube and bus travel in London.
Is it worth getting a monthly travelcard?

If you travel enough, yes. Compare monthly travelcard cost against your daily cap total. Usually worth it if you travel 10+ days monthly.

Avoid Peak Times

Peak times (6:30-9:30 and 16:00-19:00) cost significantly more. Working flexibly to avoid peaks can save 50% on some fares. Off-peak day caps are much cheaper.
