Pension Credit Eligibility UK 2026: Are You Missing Out on £3,900/Year?

SYM

Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit for people of State Pension age in the UK. It tops up weekly income to a guaranteed minimum, and — crucially — unlocks eligibility for other significant benefits including the Winter Fuel Payment, free TV licence, and free dental treatment. Yet nearly one million eligible households fail to claim it. In 2026, the maximum annual value of Pension Credit and the additional benefits it unlocks can exceed £5,000.

What Is Pension Credit?

Pension Credit has two components. Guarantee Credit tops up your weekly income to a minimum of £218.15 (single) or £332.95 (couple) in 2025/26. If your income (including State Pension, private pension, and savings income) is below these levels, Guarantee Credit makes up the difference. Savings Credit is an additional amount for those who reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016 and have saved some pension above the State Pension level.
  • Guarantee Credit: tops up income to £218.15/week (single) or £332.95 (couple)
  • Savings Credit: up to £17.01/week (single) or £19.04 (couple) for pre-2016 retirees
  • Indexed: increases each year in line with earnings or prices
  • Annual value at 2025/26 rates: up to £3,903 (single) or £5,991 (couple) from Guarantee Credit alone

Who Is Eligible?

You can claim Pension Credit if you've reached State Pension age (currently 66) and live in Great Britain. For Guarantee Credit, your income must be below the minimum guarantee level (£218.15/week single or £332.95 couple). Importantly: savings of up to £10,000 don't affect your claim (assumed income of £1/week for every £500 above). Owning your home does not affect eligibility. The savings threshold for Pension Credit is more generous than for Universal Credit.
  • Must have reached State Pension age (66 in 2026)
  • Income below: £218.15/week (single) or £332.95/week (couple)
  • Savings up to £10,000: no impact on claim
  • Above £10,000: assumed income of £1/week per £500 over threshold
  • Owning your home: not counted as capital

Benefits Unlocked by Pension Credit

Claiming Pension Credit opens the door to a range of additional benefits that can be worth more than the credit itself. The Winter Fuel Payment (from 2024: only available to Pension Credit recipients), free TV licence (for those aged 75+), free dental treatment and eye tests on the NHS, Council Tax Reduction (often up to 100% for Pension Credit recipients), and Housing Benefit. These additional benefits can add £1,000–£2,000/year on top of the Pension Credit payment.
  • Winter Fuel Payment: £200–£300 (now restricted to Pension Credit recipients)
  • Free TV licence: for those aged 75+ (worth £174.50/year)
  • Free dental treatment and eye tests
  • Council Tax Reduction: often 100% for Pension Credit recipients
  • Housing Benefit: additional help with rent

If I claim Pension Credit will it affect my State Pension?+

No. Pension Credit is entirely separate from State Pension and doesn't affect it in any way. It's simply additional money to top up your income.

My income is slightly above the threshold. Can I still get anything?+

Possibly. If you have high housing costs (rent or mortgage), certain care costs, or a disability, these can be deducted from income in the assessment. It's always worth applying or calling the helpline to check.
