Government Help With Energy Bills: Every Scheme Available in 2026

SYM

Energy bills remain one of the biggest household expenses in the UK, and many people are unaware of the full range of government support available. From automatic discounts to grant-funded insulation, 2026 still has a number of schemes worth knowing about — some of which you don't even have to apply for.

Warm Home Discount 2026

The Warm Home Discount gives eligible households a £150 discount on their electricity bill between October and March. In England and Wales, most people qualify automatically if they receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, or if they receive certain means-tested benefits and their supplier participates in the scheme. You do not need to apply — your energy supplier contacts you if you're eligible. Scotland has a separate scheme where suppliers identify and contact eligible customers.
  • £150 off your electricity bill (not gas)
  • Automatic for Pension Credit Guarantee recipients
  • Broader group: certain means-tested benefits may qualify
  • Check your eligibility via the government's checker at gov.uk
  • Applied October–March each scheme year
Is the Warm Home Discount paid as cash?+

No — it's applied directly to your electricity bill as a credit. You won't receive cash or a bank transfer.

Winter Fuel Payment

Since autumn 2024, the Winter Fuel Payment has been means-tested. To receive it in 2026, you must be over State Pension age AND receive Pension Credit or certain other means-tested benefits. Previously universal for over-66s, the change means around 10 million pensioners no longer qualify. If you're in the eligible group, the payment is £200–£300 per household and is paid automatically in November or December.
  • £200 for households with someone born 23 Sep 1944–22 Sep 1958
  • £300 for households with someone born before 23 Sep 1944
  • Must receive Pension Credit or qualifying benefits
  • Paid automatically — no application needed if you receive Pension Credit
  • If you think you qualify but haven't received it, contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre

ECO4 Scheme: Free Insulation and Heat Pumps

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) is a government programme requiring large energy suppliers to fund energy efficiency improvements for low-income and vulnerable households. Free measures can include loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, solid wall insulation, heat pumps, and solar panels. You must receive certain benefits or have a low income to qualify. Applications are made through your energy supplier or a registered ECO installer.
  • Free loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, or solid wall insulation
  • Free heat pumps or first-time central heating in some cases
  • Must receive qualifying benefits (Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, etc.)
  • Or have a household income under £31,000/year
  • Apply via your energy supplier or search for ECO4 installers at gov.uk
Does ECO4 cover private renters?+

Yes, but your landlord must consent to the improvements. The work is free to you — the cost falls on the energy supplier.

Cold Weather Payment

Cold Weather Payments are triggered automatically when the temperature in your area is forecast to be, or has been, 0°C or below for 7 consecutive days. You receive £25 for each qualifying 7-day period between November and March. You must be receiving certain benefits including Pension Credit, Income Support, income-related ESA, income-based JSA, Universal Credit with a disability or health condition, or Support for Mortgage Interest.
  • £25 per qualifying 7-day cold period
  • Triggered automatically — no application needed
  • November to March each year
  • Check if a payment has been triggered at gov.uk/cold-weather-payment
  • Does not apply if you receive Working Tax Credit only

British Gas Energy Trust and Supplier Hardship Funds

Most major energy suppliers operate hardship funds or charitable trusts that can help customers in debt or struggling to pay bills. British Gas Energy Trust is the largest — open to ALL UK energy customers regardless of supplier. Awards can clear energy debt or provide top-up vouchers. Octopus, E.ON, EDF, and others have their own similar funds. Applications are assessed on financial need and often processed within a few weeks.
  • British Gas Energy Trust: open to all customers, not just British Gas
  • Grants can clear energy debt entirely in some cases
  • Contact your supplier directly about their hardship fund
  • Citizens Advice can help you apply if the process feels complex
  • Grants do not need to be repaid

What to Do If You're Struggling Right Now

If you're behind on energy bills, contact your supplier immediately. By law, energy suppliers must offer affordable repayment plans and cannot disconnect domestic customers during winter months. Ask about their Priority Services Register if you have a disability or serious health condition — this provides extra protections. You can also get free debt advice from Citizens Advice, StepChange, or National Debtline.
  • Call your supplier — they must offer a repayment plan
  • Ask to be added to the Priority Services Register
  • No disconnection of domestic gas/electricity in winter
  • Citizens Advice: 0800 144 8848
  • StepChange: 0800 138 1111
