UK childcare ranks among the most expensive in the OECD. A nursery place for a child under 2 can cost £1,200–£2,000/month in London, and £800–£1,400 outside. But the government has expanded support significantly in 2024–2026, and most families are not claiming everything they're entitled to.
Free Childcare Hours in 2026
Following the 2023–2024 expansion, the free childcare offer in England in 2026 is:
- All 3 and 4 year olds: 15 hours/week, rising to 30 hours for working families
- 9-month to 2-year-olds of eligible working parents: 15 hours/week (expanded from 2024)
To access the 30 hours, each parent must earn at least £1 from work per week (or be on maternity/paternity leave or self-employed). Apply through the Childcare Service on gov.uk.
- •15 hours universal for all 3–4 year olds
- •30 hours for working families with 3–4 year olds
- •15 hours for working families with 9-month to 2-year-olds
- •Apply via gov.uk — reconfirm every 3 months or you lose it
Tax-Free Childcare
Tax-Free Childcare (TFC) gives you £2 for every £8 you pay for registered childcare — up to £500 per child per quarter (£2,000/year). For disabled children, the limit is £4,000/year. It applies to nurseries, childminders, after-school clubs, and holiday clubs. You can't use TFC at the same time as childcare vouchers from your employer.
Universal Credit Childcare Support
If you claim Universal Credit and pay for registered childcare to work, you can claim back up to 85% of childcare costs (up to £1,630.92/month for one child or £2,796.85 for two or more). This is a significant uplift from the old 70% cap. You must pay the childcare costs upfront, then claim back.
Employer Childcare Schemes
Childcare vouchers from employers are closed to new entrants (replaced by TFC in 2018), but if you joined before the closure you may still be using them. Also check whether your employer offers salary sacrifice schemes that include childcare benefits. Some larger employers provide on-site nurseries or corporate nursery partnerships that significantly reduce costs.
Strategies to Reduce Childcare Bills
- •Apply for all 15/30 hours entitlement — don't leave it unclaimed
- •Stack Tax-Free Childcare with free hours where possible
- •Consider a childminder instead of nursery (often cheaper, same OFSTED standards)
- •Share childcare with another family for ad hoc days
- •Use holiday clubs registered for TFC during school holidays
Can both parents claim Tax-Free Childcare?+
No — one TFC account per child. Both parents contribute into it, but it's per child, not per parent.
What if my child attends a private school with a nursery?+
Tax-Free Childcare can be used for OFSTED-registered provision in independent schools, but only for the nursery/reception year, not for school fees.
