Budgeting when you're self-employed

SYMBudgeting

When you're self-employed, your income varies from month to month. This makes traditional budgeting challenging but not impossible. The key is building systems that work with fluctuating earnings.

Separate Business and Personal Finances

Open a separate business bank account. Pay yourself a regular 'salary' from your business income. This creates predictability for your personal budget. Keep business income separate to track profits accurately.
  • Separate business account essential
  • Pay yourself a regular amount
  • Track profit, not revenue

Build a Larger Buffer

Aim for 6-12 months of expenses in your emergency fund, not the usual 3 months. The irregular nature of self-employed income means you need more cushion between jobs.
How much should I set aside for tax?

Set aside 20-30% of all income for tax. Put this in a separate savings account you cannot touch. HMRC expects payment twice a year.

Use the Minimum Income Method

Budget based on your lowest monthly income, not your average. Cover essentials with this amount. Any extra income above your baseline goes to savings or wanted spending.
