If you've served in the UK armed forces, you may be entitled to financial support that you're not aware of. From specialist benefits and grants to housing support and pension entitlements, the UK has a range of provisions for veterans. Many ex-service personnel don't claim what they're entitled to, leaving millions of pounds in support unclaimed each year.
Veterans UK and the Veterans' Gateway
Veterans UK is the main point of contact for all veteran financial support. They administer the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS), the War Pension Scheme, and provide guidance on other entitlements. The Veterans' Gateway (veteransgateway.org.uk) is a first point of contact for advice, connecting you to the right support. They can help with housing, employment, finances, health, and more. The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise from the nation that those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated fairly. It means you should receive the same access to public services as other UK citizens, and in some cases, priority access.

Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS)
The AFCS provides tax-free lump sum and regular payments for illness, injury, or death caused by service on or after 6 April 2005. This covers physical injuries, mental health conditions, and diseases. Payments are based on the severity of the condition. For example, a minor injury might receive a one-off payment of around £1,200, while severe disablement could provide weekly payments of over £200 plus a lump sum. Claims can be made at any time after service, but it's best to apply within 8 years of the injury or illness developing. You don't need to have left the forces to claim.
- •Tax-free lump sums and regular payments for service-related conditions
- •Covers physical injuries, mental health, and diseases
- •Can claim at any time after service (best within 8 years)
- •Apply through Veterans UK or gov.uk/afcs
- •Free independent advice available from SSAFA
War Pension Scheme (WPS)
The WPS provides compensation for service before 6 April 2005. If you were injured or ill due to service before this date, you may be entitled to a war pension. This includes a weekly payment based on the degree of disablement, with additional supplements for dependents. The scheme also provides a war widow's or widower's pension for surviving spouses and partners. The WPS has been largely replaced by AFCS for new claims, but if you were serving before 2005, you might still claim under WPS or have migrated to AFCS.
- •For service-related conditions from before 6 April 2005
- •Weekly payments based on disablement level
- •Additional supplements for dependents
- •War widow's/widower's pension available

Housing Support for Veterans
Veterans can access several housing support options. Service Personnel's Accommodation: if you're still in the forces but being discharged, you may be eligible for a period of notice to find alternative housing. Veterans' Nomination Scheme: some housing associations give priority to veterans for affordable housing. Local Authority Housing: as a veteran, you may have priority needs under the Armed Forces Covenant, and some councils have dedicated veteran housing officers. Veterans' Mental Health Service: if housing stress is affecting your mental health, this service can provide specialist support. For homeless veterans, specific services exist including The Beacon ( Cornwall), Stoll (London), and Veterans Aid (nationwide).

Veterans and Benefits
Veterans can claim mainstream UK benefits like anyone else, but some have specific provisions. Universal Credit: veterans can claim, and having a combat-related injury may increase your payment. Housing Benefit: if you're a veteran with a service-related disability, you may get extra help with housing costs. Council Tax: some local councils offer discounts for veterans — check your local authority. War Pension and AFCS payments are not counted as income for means-tested benefits, meaning they won't reduce your other entitlements. The Forces Help to Buy scheme (now extended) allows serving personnel to borrow up to 50% of their salary (up to £25,000) interest-free for a deposit.
- •Standard benefits available to all UK residents
- •War Pension/AFCS payments excluded from means-tested benefits
- •Some councils offer veteran-specific council tax discounts
- •Forces Help to Buy: borrow up to £25,000 interest-free
- •Veterans may have priority for certain support services
Pension Entitlements
If you served in the armed forces, you may have additional pension entitlements. The Armed Forces Pension Scheme (AFPS) provides a pension based on your rank and length of service. Some personnel are entitled to an Immediate Annuity (Ill Health Pension) if discharged due to medical reasons. Veterans can also claim State Pension — you may be able to claim National Insurance credits for time served. If you have gaps in your NI record from service or afterwards, you may be able to buy voluntary contributions to boost your State Pension. Contact Veterans UK for your AFPS forecast.
