How to Save Money on Your Mobile Phone Contract

SYM Team

Your mobile phone contract is probably costing you more than it should. The UK mobile market is fiercely competitive, yet millions of customers stay on expensive deals long after they could be paying less. Whether you're locked into a contract, out of contract, or about to upgrade, there are smart moves you can make to cut your bill significantly — often by £20 to £30 a month.

Are You Still Paying for a Phone You Already Own?

This is the single most common way people overpay. When you take out a phone contract, the monthly cost includes two things: the cost of the handset (spread over 24 or 36 months) and the cost of the airtime (calls, texts, data). Once the contract ends, most networks automatically roll you onto a month-to-month plan — but at the same price. You're still paying for the phone even though you've already paid it off.

Ofcom estimated that millions of UK customers were overpaying by an average of £22 a month this way. If your contract has ended and you haven't switched to a cheaper deal, that's potentially £264 a year going straight in the bin.

Switch to SIM-Only When Your Contract Ends

If you're happy with your current phone, a SIM-only deal is almost always the best option once your contract expires. SIM-only plans cost a fraction of bundled contracts because you're only paying for the service, not the handset. You can get generous SIM-only deals — 30GB+ data, unlimited calls and texts — for £8 to £15 a month on networks like Smarty, Giffgaff, Lebara, or Voxi.

Compare that to a typical bundled contract at £40 to £60 a month and the savings are enormous. Even premium networks like Three, Vodafone, and EE offer SIM-only deals at £15 to £25 for plenty of data. You're looking at savings of £300 to £500 a year just by making this one switch.

Consider MVNOs (The Networks You Haven't Heard Of)

Mobile Virtual Network Operators use the same masts and infrastructure as the big networks but charge much less. Giffgaff and Tesco Mobile run on O2's network. Smarty and iD run on Three. Voxi and Asda Mobile use Vodafone. You get the same coverage and call quality at a fraction of the price.

Smarty, for example, offers unlimited data for around £16 a month with no contract — you can leave any time. That's roughly half what Three charges for a similar deal on a 12-month contract. The service is identical because it's literally the same network.

How Much Data Do You Actually Need?

Many people pay for far more data than they use. Check your actual usage in your phone's settings or your network's app. If you're connected to WiFi at home and at work, you might only use 3-5GB of mobile data a month. There's no point paying for an unlimited data plan if you consistently use a fraction of it.

A 10GB plan covers most people's needs comfortably and can cost as little as £6 to £8 a month on budget networks. Even if you use your phone for streaming on the go, 20-30GB is more than enough for most users.

Negotiate With Your Current Provider

If you like your current network and don't want to switch, call their retentions team when your contract is up. Tell them you've been comparing deals and you're thinking of leaving. They'll almost always offer you a better deal to stay — sometimes matching or beating the best SIM-only deals on the market.

Since 2023, Ofcom requires networks to send you an end-of-contract notification with details of available deals. But don't just accept whatever they offer in that text — call and negotiate. The first offer is rarely the best one.

If You Need a New Phone, Buy Separately

When you do need to upgrade your handset, consider buying the phone outright (or on a 0% interest deal) and pairing it with a cheap SIM-only plan. The total cost is often lower than a bundled contract, and you avoid being locked in for 24-36 months.

Refurbished phones are another excellent option. Companies like Backmarket, Reboxed, and Musicmagpie sell refurbished iPhones and Samsung devices with warranties for 30-50% less than new. A refurbished iPhone that's one or two generations old, paired with a £10/month SIM, is probably the best value combo available.

Watch Out for Mid-Contract Price Rises

Most UK networks include a clause allowing them to raise prices mid-contract, usually by CPI inflation plus a fixed percentage (often 3.9%). This means your £40/month contract could become £43 or £44 after a year. It's legal because it's in the terms you agreed to, but it's still annoying.

Some networks — notably Smarty, Giffgaff, and some Tesco Mobile plans — don't do mid-contract increases. If price certainty matters to you, factor this into your decision. And if a price rise is applied to your contract, check whether it gives you the right to exit penalty-free — it sometimes does.

Use WiFi Calling and Messaging

If you're on a limited plan, make the most of WiFi wherever it's available. WiFi calling is built into most modern smartphones and uses your home or office WiFi for calls instead of your mobile network. WhatsApp, FaceTime, and other messaging apps use data or WiFi — so your minutes and texts matter less than you think.

Bundle Savings With Family Plans

If you're managing phones for a family, multi-line discounts or family plans can save a decent chunk. Voxi offers plans designed for younger users. Some networks give discounts when you have multiple SIMs on one account. Even just helping a partner or parent switch to a cheaper deal is money saved for the household as a whole.

When to Switch: The Best Times of Year

The best mobile deals tend to appear around Black Friday (late November), January sales, and when new flagship phones launch (as networks try to shift older stock). If your contract is ending around these times, you're in a strong position to grab a bargain. Even outside these windows, the market is competitive enough that good deals are almost always available.

Your Action Plan

Check when your contract ends (it's in your network's app or on your latest bill). Compare SIM-only deals on sites like Uswitch, Compare the Market, or MoneySupermarket. Call your network to negotiate. And track the savings — switching from a £45 bundled contract to a £12 SIM-only deal saves you £396 a year. Pop that into your SYM savings pot and watch it grow.
