The 1p saving challenge is the most beginner-friendly saving challenge there is. Day 1: save 1p. Day 2: save 2p. By day 365, you're saving £3.65 — and you've accumulated £667.95 in total. It's almost unbelievably simple, which is exactly why it works.
How the Maths Works
The total saved is the sum of 1p + 2p + 3p ... + 365p = (365 × 366) ÷ 2 = 66,795p = £667.95. The daily amounts are so small that the early weeks feel completely frictionless. By the midpoint (day 183), you're saving £1.83 per day. By day 300, you're saving £3.00 per day. The maximum single day amount (day 365) is £3.65 — less than a coffee.
Making It Work in Practice
You don't need to literally save coins — transfer the daily equivalent amount to a savings account each morning, or do it weekly (add up 7 days and transfer the total). Many people prefer to batch this into weekly transfers to reduce friction. Week 1 total: (1+2+3+4+5+6+7)p = 28p. Week 26 (midpoint): £11.06 that week. Week 52: £23.45 that week. Use SYM's challenge tracker to automatically calculate the right amount and remind you on your schedule.
Variations and Modifications
10x version: save 10p, 20p, 30p... ending at £3.65 per day, total £6,679.50. This is more significant money but still manageable amounts. Monthly version: save £0.01 × day of month × 12 roughly — less precise but simpler. Reverse version: start at £3.65 in January and end with pennies in December — easier when January pay is still healthy. The original version remains the most popular because the slow start makes it accessible to anyone.
