Why the April 5th Deadline Is Non-Negotiable
The UK tax year runs from April 6th to April 5th the following year. Each tax year you get a fresh £20,000 ISA allowance — and the key word is 'each'. You can't roll over unused allowance to next year. If you put £5,000 in your ISA this year and leave the other £15,000 untouched, that £15,000 allowance is gone at midnight on April 5th. You can't get it back. This is why financial advisers call it one of the most important annual deadlines in UK personal finance.
How Much Allowance Do You Have Left?
Log in to your ISA provider and check your current balance against what you deposited this tax year. Most providers show your remaining allowance directly in the app or online banking. If you're not sure which provider you use, check your email for ISA statements — they're required to send them annually. Remember: you can hold multiple ISAs (Cash ISA, Stocks & Shares ISA, Lifetime ISA, Innovative Finance ISA) but your total deposits across all of them cannot exceed £20,000 in one tax year.
