The average UK mobile phone contract costs £40-£60/month — that's £480-£720 per year, much of which goes towards paying off the handset. Once your contract ends, you might still be paying the same amount even though the phone is paid off. And even if you're on a reasonable deal, there's almost certainly a cheaper option that gives you everything you need. Here's how to slash your phone bill without giving up a good phone or reliable service.
Switch to SIM-Only
If your phone contract has ended and your handset is paid off, switch to a SIM-only deal immediately. SIM-only plans cost £6-£20/month for generous data allowances — compared to £40-£60/month on a handset contract. Even with unlimited data, SIM-only deals rarely exceed £20-£25/month. If your phone is still in good condition, there's no reason to upgrade — keep it and pocket the £20-£40/month difference. That's £240-£480/year saved. When you do need a new phone, buy it outright (or refurbished) and stay on SIM-only.
Consider MVNO Networks
Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) use the same masts and coverage as the big networks but charge significantly less. Giffgaff and VOXI use O2's network. Smarty and iD use Three's network. Tesco Mobile uses O2's network. Sky Mobile uses O2's network. You get identical coverage for a fraction of the price. Giffgaff's £10/month plan offers 20GB of data on O2's network — the same coverage O2 charges £25+ for. MVNOs are the open secret of cheap phone bills.
Right-Size Your Data
Check your actual data usage in your phone's settings. Most people overestimate how much data they need. If you're connected to WiFi at home and at work, you might only use 2-5GB of mobile data monthly — even if your plan includes 50GB. Downgrading from an unlimited plan to one that matches your actual usage could save £10-£15/month. On the flip side, don't overpay for a plan that's too small and incur out-of-bundle charges. Check 3 months of usage to find your average, then choose a plan with a 20% buffer above that.
Buy Refurbished Phones
A new iPhone or Samsung flagship costs £800-£1,200. The same phone, refurbished (12-18 months old), costs £300-£600 — and comes with a warranty. Refurbished phones are professionally inspected, repaired if needed, and often look near-new. Companies like Back Market, musicMagpie, and Apple's own refurbished store sell phones at significant discounts. A refurbished phone on a cheap SIM-only deal costs a fraction of a new handset on contract — and you own the phone outright.
Negotiate at Renewal
If you prefer to stay with your current network, call their retention team when your contract ends. Say you've been looking at SIM-only deals from competitors and you're considering leaving. They'll almost always offer a better deal than the standard renewal price. Some networks proactively offer loyalty deals — check your app for upgrade or retention offers. If they can't match the cheapest SIM-only deals, thank them and switch. There's no penalty for leaving once your contract has ended, and the switching process now takes just one working day.
Other Ways to Save
Use WiFi calling at home to avoid using mobile minutes. Download Spotify playlists and Netflix shows over WiFi to avoid using mobile data. Family plans often offer discounts for multiple lines. Some employers offer workplace perks on mobile phone deals. Consider whether you need to insure your phone — if you have a £200 refurbished phone, monthly insurance at £10-£15 doesn't make financial sense. And if you're on a contract that includes the handset cost, know exactly when the handset portion is paid off — some networks continue charging the same price unless you actively switch.
