The 52-Week Saving Challenge 2026: Save £1,378 by Christmas

SYM

The 52-week saving challenge is one of the most popular savings methods in the UK. The concept: save £1 in week 1, £2 in week 2, £3 in week 3, all the way up to £52 in week 52. Total saved: £1,378. It builds the habit of saving while scaling up gradually.

Week-by-Week Amounts

Weeks 1-13 (Q1): you save between £1 and £13 each week — manageable amounts that build the habit. Weeks 14-26 (Q2): £14 to £26 per week. Around week 20 you'll hit £210 saved. Weeks 27-39 (Q3): £27 to £39 per week. The challenge gets harder here. Weeks 40-52 (Q4): £40 to £52 per week. Week 52 is the big one — £52 in a single week. The total of all 52 payments is £1,378.

The Reverse 52-Week Strategy

Many people prefer to start with the large amounts and end small — £52 in week 1, £51 in week 2, down to £1 in week 52. This works well if you have January salary still intact after Christmas, and it means the light weeks fall in December when money is tightest. Same total: £1,378. Just in a different order. SYM's saving challenge tracker supports both directions.

Making It Automatic

The easiest way to complete this challenge is to automate it. Set up a standing order for the correct amount each week, with a reference like 'Week 14 challenge'. You can adjust the amount weekly via your bank app. Alternatively, round up to a fixed weekly amount — saving £27 every week of the year gives you £1,404 at year end, which is close enough and simpler to maintain.
